Flash-Back Stories

“I find it easier to speak about my feelings when I’m not in the picture… These are the patterns of thought that are taught by society. For me, patterns represent the inherited behavior and personality traits.”

Amaia Marzabal

The Flash-Back Stories is a series of paintings that the artist started during her art residency at ESKFFoundation, in Mana Contemporary, NJ. At that time Marzabal began to incorporate figures with patterns for the first time. The theme here is a selection of “Flash-backs” from her past. In these series, the artist embraces the challenge of conceptualizing from one’s memory by the aid of found photographs at random of subjects, resembling the fractions of moments from her past. Marzabal’s work portrays her emotions, that she brings into these scenes as a tool to connect with the viewer.
